Improving My Health and Lifestyle With Farrell's

Like most people I was hesitant to join Farrell’s, but not for the same reason many others may be.  My fear was whether I could physically do the exercise’s and keep up in class.   I have had some serious health issues over the past couple years.  In November 2014, I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) and was diagnosed in the most advanced phase of it, Blast Crisis phase.  To make matters worse,  I had several chromosome abnormalities that had occurred as a result of the Leukemia and its advanced phase.  One of these abnormalities I was told had a very poor track record, in fact,  from what they could find no one had survived more than 9 months with this abnormality.

As a result I was told I had about 9 months to live, with my only saving grace being a bone marrow transplant, which had a 50/50 shot, but that I was not in good enough health to have one.  So I went through several months of chemo.  March of 2015  I was told things were steady enough to have the transplant.  I spent over 30 days in the hospital for the transplant, before being released home under lock and key essentially due to having no immune system.  Over the next year and a half I had many issues, including days where I could not even walk on my own two feet and had to crawl to the bathroom.  I also had issues with GVHD (Graft Verse Host Disease) which eventually attacked my lungs, causing scarring of the airways in my lungs, a process which cannot be reversed once the scarring has occurred.  This of course made simple task such as walking up a few steps or even picking up my child very difficult due to difficulty breathing.  My lungs were slowly losing function.  I ended up getting down to 42% lung function.  I began seeing a specialist in Bethesda, Maryland at the National Institute of Health.  For fear of making things worse I was told there wasn’t much they could do for me, so I was sent home with the instructions to stay healthy or things could continue to worsen.
cwDuring Transplant
I began pulmonary therapy at the University of Iowa Hospital to try and improve my health and halt the decrease in lung functions.  After a few months of not much improvement, I halted that, and tried to get back into normal life routine, by going to work, and trying to deal with my current state of health and praying things didn’t worsen.

It was at this time I began thinking about trying Farrell’s. My wife finished the 10 week session and joined as a FIT member in Bettendorf, IA.  She was having good results and really enjoyed going.  I hesitated for a while.  I feared that I would not be able do the activities due to not being able to breathe.  After a few months of thinking about it, I realized I could stop trying things and had deal with life as is.  I could remain being limited on what I was able to do at home and with daughters, or I could continue to try everything and anything until something improved the life style I was living.
cwPost Transplant Pre Farrells (3)
I signed up for the 10 week Summer Session in Coralville, IA.  At my 5 week testing, I had lost almost 20 lbs, doubled my sit ups and pushups in a minute as well as improved my sit and reach by 10 inches.  I’m still going through my 10 weeks, but I have already noticed a huge difference in my breathing and ability to keep up from week 1 until now.  I also had a pulmonary test done on my lungs during week 5 which showed that I am now up to 54% lung function, despite being told these numbers probably wouldn’t improve, and that the goal was for them to just not decrease.
cwPost Transplant Pre Farrells
I have no idea if my lungs will improve anymore from where they are currently, but I do know that I feel a lot more capable of doing activities that I have had difficulty with since the transplant and believe that is a result of my improved health.
